In my view, the primary focus should be on encouraging the writers to write. I do not review items I don't enjoy anymore because I see it as a waste of my time. So, if you get a review from me, I enjoyed reading your work. The amazing thing about this whole process is that reading an inspiring review usually leads to me reading more of a reviewer's work also. So, it's a win-win.

something I do not like. I do not enjoy writing hyper-critical reviews. I do NOT believe that "honesty" is a synonym for "mean." If I see someone being "mean" here on the public reviewing page, in group behaviors, or just acting as a bully I will not send them my reviews. The only exception to that would be judging a site contest - there all items get honest (and hopefully diplomatic) reviews of the work from me with no exceptions.

*Cool**Idea*I identified with the frustration of being certain the grade would be poor because of standing up to the teacher and disagreeing with her theory about the book.

I enjoyed this trip to my past when I first met a teacher who was open to opposing view points. It happened in college.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

You never forget a teacher like this. I have had a lot of dopey ones who required lockstep agreement. When someone opens the world of reason and logical argument it's a wonderful thing.

I enjoyed reading your story and thinking about teachers and professors in the past, good and bad.

I am a big fan of WW II historical fiction.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about this time and how Jacob manages to live his life after the war, but still retains a lot of sensory memory. This leads to a discovery that, given his occupation, seems meant to be or preordained.

I like that Jacob is determined to do a good job for the people he serves. That is noble and a tribute to his family who is long gone.

Technically, I also like that you use larger print as it makes it easier on my eyes to read a longer story.

Your fine tale is well written and held my attention all the way through.

*Cow*You had mentioned this in our new campfire so I came to read and send a review.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea*I thought about the whole Vietnam thing. My parents were older when they had me. My Dad was a young soldier in WWII in the Battle of the Bulge. Way before I knew him. My brother went to Vietnam. My husband (who is older than me) was on a ship for two tours in Vietnam.

I remember being scared my brother wasn't coming back. I didn't meet my husband until the 80s.

Music of the 70s. American Woman stands out. Maggie May by Rod Stewart. Great music.

Fun to think of that era and remember what a tool Nixon was. I liked Bobby Kennedy because I believed he would have ended that war earlier. Now, we will never know and they are talking about paroling the guy who killed him. How awful. How many lives might Bobby Kennedy saved? We can go to the Vietnam Memorial in DC and see the names. More than 25,000 soldiers.

So sad to think of it. What a waste. Like the Iraq War, too. What wastes.

I loved especially reading about Pet Rocks. I gave my Dad a pet rock and he thought it was so funny. He put it on his desk. I wonder what happened to it. I probably can guess what happened to it! *Laugh*

I like how you engineered the twist that this took. I won't give away the plot in the review. I thought the characters were well drawn and their responses to each other seemed very natural and intriguing. I understand the title in retrospect.

This was not, in any way, predictable, although in hindsight, I did see clues as to where you would wind it up.

I enjoyed reading this very much and thinking about how an overblown ego (men and women) can be a dangerous weapon in the right/wrong hands.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea*I thought about how hard it is to see a loved one deteriorate in one of these places, even the caring ones. So many were left so alone so long in the horrible decisions made in the pandemic.

It is one of the cruelest ironies that the cherished visit is so hard on the visitor.

This prescient piece was written years before the world descended into madness that made even a simple visit impossible for enough time to do great damage.

The stomach lurching is something I could readily identify with. I went often when my mother was in such a place, but it took a toll. It always takes a toll and maybe it should.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I appreciate the notion of cherishing the time at hand and not taking it for granted in the desire to get out of there.

I know the two things are at war in most people and so many cannot handle it.

I thought this was moving and true to life. Very sad, and at the same time heartwarming.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea*I am interested in this time period so I was eager to read. The narrator goes in search of the past. It can be frustrating, but if one is open to positive signs, encouragement can be had from the surroundings.

The narrator tells of desperate times, indeed, revolving areound the desperation of WW II. It sounds like people jumped to conclusions then like they tend to do now. I guess that is the sign of a troubled nation when the worst motives are assumed almost automatically.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I especially like the title as it relates to the renewed hope at the end, in addition to perhaps rehabilitating the history of the family. It sounds like a mission that was passed down through children at the time of the fire, who became parents.

Why go on a search unless there is quite a bit of question as to what really happened. I took the new growth on faith as an incredibly positive sign.

You don't answer every question here, but you don't have to. As I reader, I come to the conclusion that the truth is probably already known through the related history of the five vulnerable children.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea*A true friend is someone who is happy for you when you do well and who cheers for you as you cheer for them. They wish you the best and don't get caught up with competition and envy, or with putting you down.

Your poem invites the reader to examine their own failings in friendship relationships over time. I write in my reviews about how I react to the poem, since my reaction is the only thing I am really an expert on at times.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

The notion of forgiveness looms large, if everyone can accept their own failings and move forward. It's easier said than done with humans, though.

Very thoughtful poem - I enjoyed it.

*Cool**Idea*My grandparents lived on a farm in Iowa so this brought back memories of the home place. Ours burned to the ground and had to be rebuilt by my grandpa, but the memories of the places linger even now.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

This part is particularly haunting:

"A farm was sacrificed for future beauty,
that old house a fading memory."

It's weird what is considered in fashion and how sometimes we long for what we cannot have - that from the past that we treasure in our hearts as long as we live.

I would love to see my own old farmhouse again, but I know it would be changed, and maybe even gone, so I make do with the vision of it in my mind.

Lovely poem of remembrance and change. Well done!

I started to think about all that has happened on here and otherwise since you wrote this poem. This is like a snapshot of 2010, through the lens of 2022.

So much has changed, hasn't it? Wow.

Sometimes I look through folders in my port and it triggers memories. I've been here since the beginning, but still more than 10 years is a substantial chunk of time.

It made me think about the time when I actually turned 10 in real life. Lots of nostalgia and wonderment at the way the world has evolved.

When I saw the title and that it is YOU, I knew I had to read.

I thought about how last week I had a discussion about regular yellow onions vs. sweet vidalia onions in potato salad.

Someone thought I was being quite peculiar doing a comparison. They told me "an onion is an onion." I disagreed.

You see that I have the tendency to obsess on plants and animals at times.

I like the singing vegetables. We are about to plant some tomatoes in our garden. We used to have a huge garden elsewhere that my better half sharecropped. All sorts of vegeys!

I thought about how the days develop. I like the way you used "orange" to describe the scene more than once. It ties it together for me as the day progresses.

*Cool**Idea*I think that difficult times and events can cause one to reflect more than the person might do otherwise. This can lead to discoveries about others or oneself that might be very difficult. I do see that it is true that stress and trials can lead to revelations that might or might not be pleasant, but are nevertheless informative.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like especially, that you say how you deal with discoveries like this is a choice and not something that is forced or predetermined. The individual must choose whether to turn it into something positive, no matter how negative things might seem at the time.

See the positive and grab a lifeline or sink into a self-absorbed pool of regret and pain.

Very thoughtful and engaging poem.

I liked especially, the repeated refrain of "Though I distrust," "Though I disclaim," and "Though I disdain".

I think you show your character development through these words. There is an acceptance, as you explain, but there is also tremendous underlying disillusion and disappointment conveyed.

I like how the character's ruminations lead to taking charge and being the one to "end this game." There is a detachment from the horror and and strengthening that permeates the mood.

There is a definite struggle, but not a defeat. Thus, the title fits the new resolve.

This proves you don't need a lot of words to convey the feeling of a time of year (or anything else really) to your readers. It is particularly effective in using the shining sun to emphasize how cold it is.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

*Cool**Idea*Entertaining the young can be very challenging. I find it is more fun as a grandparent than a parent. It is always good to suggest that they entertain themselves, but we end up playing their game and singing to their tune.

Oh, what memories are created in the playing of the game, though.

How can they be bored when they are constantly entertained, I wonder?

This was very amusing and it made me smile. How many times have I heard someone say, "I'm bored" as if I am their entertainment director, I wonder.

Very well captured and Chutes and Ladders (as well as Candyland) has solved a lot of boring afternoon adventures.

*Cool**Idea* This is a nice, observational way of introducing young characters. I liked the description of Ja-Ja. I could picture a hopping alligator with bunny ears.

It sounds cute.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I like how the friends stick together through changes and life adventures. It sounds like they are always ready to help each other. Anakin has a lot to learn, but she will help him to be a good student when she can. Padme seems more mature, but girls usually are ahead of boys that way.

I got that feeling anyway. I enjoyed reading this very much!

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how traveling is so good for the mind and soul.

You have honed your craft to the point that you are comfortable with your own style. That takes time and dedication. I am sure that your listeners learn a lot.

Of course, I enjoyed hearing about your get-together with the Writing.Com family. How wonderful. Back in the early 2000s, when I lived in the DC area still I got to meet quite a few people from here in person. Most aren't here any more, but it was very enjoyable.

Do it while you are all still young and can enjoy it, I say.

I think it's the celebratory spirit that permeates of getting on with life and enjoyment post Covid. I used to travel and love it. Now, I am afraid of it and just about everything else I guess. LoL. It's nice to live vicariously through your words here and imagine meeting up with such nice friends.

Who knows what adventures you all will have in the future?! Be sure and write about them so we can enjoy and imagine through your words.

What a wonderful poem about the many fascinating aspects of the sea and the goddess who keeps it all so safe and preserves the memories over time.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I particularly liked the timelessness and references to history and the Titanic and all the things that have transpired on the sea and that the goddess has watched over for as long as there has been time. She is the one constant who never changes as the sea ebbs and flows around her.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

I thought about how the Ukraine has been on my mind for days, too. The sunflower is a lovely image to hold in our hearts in hope for better days. I have been following it on the BBC.com, which is calmer and less hysterical than the reporting I see in this country. The British seem to have a good handle on what is going on, as usual.

I think that unlike the 1940s, now people have ways of finding out what is going on. World condemnation will rain down on Putin for what he has done.

What does hooves moo and applaud about while reading your item?

I read in the hope for the future. There is no future in the cruelty and violence that the Russians are trying to use to get their way. It is not 1939 and the world is not as naive as they were when Hitler did this sort of thing.

Hope and pray that somehow they find a way to stop Putin and make Ukraine a part of NATO once and for all. I hope it all backfires and the sunflowers bloom all over the world in celebration of the blue and yellow flag of Ukraine.

This is a very moving entry. Where have all the flowers gone, that song comes to mind as I picture those fields of sunflower glory.

Well done! Take heart - The President of Ukraine seems to be a very brave and likable fellow. He will win the hearts and minds of the people, maybe even some of the Russian people who don't go for Putin's antics.

What does hoovsie think about while perusing your item?

Dealing with grief and worry is such a hard time. Caring for someone else, human or otherwise, is definitely the way to heal, if healing is possible after such a loss.

I am so sorry for the loss suffered as I see this is a non-fiction story.

I am happy for Rosie that she has such an attentive and caring human, who takes joy in her getting acclimated to her new home. She will always know kindness going forward and that is such a blessing.

We had our own blessing of a Basset Hound for more than 14 years. She trained us well. As you probably, already know, they train us not the other way around. She liked us to let her go to sleep early in her later years so she would bark at us if we made noise. That still makes us smile. A lot of what went on does that.

And now, even though we are without our Boo, we have a rescue pup living next door to spoil.

I thought about your determination to succeed. I admire that and I think you are probably well on your way. You have achievable goals that you know you can accomplish. Sounds like a good plan to me!

No expert on keeping my own New Year's Resolutions, I have already broken what little I did make at the beginning of January.

So, I'm also looking to be inspired with my own plans for continuing this year.

*Cool**Idea* I think mental health is crucial right now so I was struck by your emphasis on giving yourself a pep talk and a push in the right direction to keep things on trace. We all need that now. I really see that all over the place, the sadness.

My criteria for judging Dear Me letters is about what I find memorable and interesting. It may not agree with anyone else's judgment, but I bring my own bag of experiences to the mix. I have always felt that travel was the best collection of experiences in my life. I also enjoy a sense of humor or something that touches me personally.

*Cool**Idea* I thought about your review of last year and all you have been through with heartache and natural disaster. You found your way to forgiveness and that's a big thing that challenges most people in the best of circumstances.

There is much to admire in your achievements and in your focus on the future.
