If I Could


Why?
I would,
If I could,
Turn back the hour.
With keys I somehow should
Remember, if I had the power
To return the springtime to her flower;
Listen as the whippoorwill sold my lover's sigh
Or heard the leaves in an evening shower
Dripping on her ivy bower.
If I had understood
The fleeting hour.
If I could,
I would
Try.
