Grounds for Celebration

Two reasons to observe the first day of May.

May First, historically significant
in that celebrations occurred worldwide
stretching back into antiquity…man knew
well to revere the day, the Month of May,
for during such more sunlight warmed
the Earth, and mankind has always
revered the sun. Why should he
not do so? The sun gives life…
the sun is life, in a sense.

Thus man toiled, he worked the land;
as May First came, he understood
the significance, both in how
the planet warmed, but too
in how his work flourished;
why not then, designate
this day to also honor
workers everywhere,
to give them due,
this first of May.

This doorway into summer comes
as May First opens up her house.
Spring now in stride—although
a chill in morn is felt—yet glad
of season, joyous chant of
those who relish in her
right, that festival with
added sun, a shout to
workers everywhere.
