across the board
our eyes meet
locking
and we hold our breath
for just a moment
wondering -
trying to guess
our next moves.

Finally,
slowly
nervously
I slide my Knight
into place
remove my finger
and look up at you.

         CHECK

But your eyes
won't meet mine -
a smile
begins to form
on your lips
as you
dramatically
confidently
move your Queen.

         CHECK MATE!
