When you get a really thorough and helpful review that tears apart your latest short story (baby) and makes you question everything you ever knew, you should be like "thank wise one, thank you for your help". Even though I recognize this, my heart is still saying "not today, Satan, not today!"

What's the item number? Remember, a review is just one person's opinion. If this story is truly your baby, don't abandon it so soon. Wait for more reviews.
Oh no, I would not abandon it over one review. It just made me consider reworking it quite a bit.

If anything, I now want to work on it more. I'd love more feedback, though. :)
Just getting back into writing after a 2-year break. It feels oh so good to be back, but unlike riding a bike it does take some practice to get back into. Check out my new short story if you get a chance!

It is a work-in-progress, but I'd love some feedback!
Welcome back then Early!

What is "purple prose"? I saw the term on goodreads quite a bit, but I've never seen it on writing.com. From what I've gathered it means that descriptions are too ornate, but where is the line drawn and why is it so abhorrent?
Okay I looked it up in two different resources. I had a little more hard understanding the wikipedia but after reading the second link, I was glad to have read it. Okay so purple pose means adding to much deteail-adjectives- in poetry that breaks of the flow from the rest of the poetry. Now, the purple patch I don't get so I will read up and find out what that is. I can't believe they have a purple patch in literature *RollEyes* Anyways, I will look it up under helpful resources. Ttyl.
Don't overthink Purple Prose. It's the part where the author stops the story in order to show off how good a writer he is. If you were directing a play about Soldiers in the Persian Gulf, and an actor stops the play and starts quoting Shakespeare, that's the effect. If it distracts the reader from your story and sounds silly: what could be worse?
Okay but what is purple patch? Your right to say not to over think purple pose because I remember reading it had two different meaning. Seriously purple patch is a wired name to it. To: Joto-Kai Author IconMail Icon
Just read "The Ruins". Probably the best horror novel I've read since King's "It".
Does anyone else ever give one star reviews? I can't think of any possible way to make that rating inoffensive, but some pieces truly are at a 1 star level. If we don't use all the ratings, the results become skewed. I found myself struggling with this.
The ratings are off anyhow. Nobody really knows what you mean by a 4 or a 2 unless they know you. I wish I could review without rating, truth to tell, because I feel so random in my rating. And the time that I did send a 1 was a mistake, I wonder if I ran him off of w.com. That's why I wrote "My stars, what does that mean"... It says, just find the meaning that you want in the ratings you get. A 1 means you could do better, for instance...
Well you can't just say, "Dude, this is #&$#." I think the only possible way to write a review with a 1 star rating is to write out a heavy sigh, and suggest they look for a writing mentor.
Posted a 5 line poem for the power reviewing contest. Let me know what you think.
Sometimes reviewing is not rewarding at all.
Postive review I meant to mean is that it was a low score but it was very accurate. I thought it was positive because the tips you gave was helpful.
Just my 2 cents but setting aside the help that you provide to others, the reward of reviewing is the practice and experience that you get. This translates into the ability to better review your own work. This should result in your own work getting better.
Ink Wizard, I think helping people edit their work and learn from it is (usually) rewarding in itself. Thanks Jay Stevens, you're right, of course.
Why is it that critiques that you know are correct are the hardest to accept? I always have a "oh no you didn't" reaction for a second before I check myself and take their advice.
Thanks! I like to think I take good advice when it is given to me, I just wish I didn't have that moment of defensiveness. I appreciate your kind words!
You are just an aspiring writer like the rest of us.
Feelings always come from beliefs; probably you believe that you NEED to do right the first time. Sometimes I feel like that, other times it's like, "OH, I get it! Now I can fix it!" But that's recent...
I may never catch up in my return reviews. It's a good problem to have, I guess. *Smile* Sorry if it takes me a while to get to you!
No, just take it one at a time *Writing* Today I shared the same problem. Taking a Comma course and when I needed to write I was afraid to write commas for my instructor *Laugh* It's about losening up and writing freely.
Ah man, just got a killer review that made me feel like a newb. Someone's got to put me in my place, I guess.
Ugh. I hate waiting to edit my short stories until after a contest is over. This will teach me not to procrastinate.
Copy it into a text editor and have at it! LOL.
Whew. I just finished a very rough draft of the longest short story I've ever written. Thank you for the inspiration, Saint Nick. Hopefully this will help me branch out from horror a little. Now for some intense proofreading.
