Two Souls Sundered

A free verse poem about the loss of a spouse. Rhyme: abca

Upstairs a noise sounded,
or so I hoped.
"Are you there?"
Silence resounded.

I know where you lay;
so cold and pale,
your soul having escaped,
leaving me alone to stay.

Tomorrow you will descend
six feet from where I stand.
It's so hard to believe
our days together are at an end.

My love remains for you, dear.
Forever in love, through eternity,
you will always be held near.
Your beautiful smile will never disappear.

If I had one more moment,
I'd hold you close in my arms
and let you know you are my love,
my euphoriant, my enjoyment.

If your soul can hear my heart
there's one thing I'd ask while we are sundered:
"Please don't go far; please wait for me,
for it won't be long and this world I'll depart.

"Together again, we will reunite.
In eternal glee, our souls will embrace.
But for now, the days are dark and dim
until the day I share with you heaven's light."
