I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

I wish I could put my ex behind me like putting a file in a cabinet, but 9 years later, I'm in therapy trying to rid myself of the trauma. It wasn't just cheating, though. It was verbal abuse and sleep deprivation from the verbal abuse while he was fueled by meth and I wanted nothing more than sleep.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

This sounds like a complete summary, but the presentation could use work. I recommend including a question or three to entice the reader.

This demonstrates how, sadly, religion is often used to control people. While not as extreme, similar things happen in America.

This sounds like a very odd experience.

The grammar could use work. If you want a more in-depth look at sentence structures, I recommend reading "The Elements of Grammar" by Margaret Shertzer.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This was a simple and to-the-point introduction. I think it could have used a few more details like why you got into writing in the first place. Perhaps search the internet for interviews with your favorite authors for inspiration.

Review of A box of nothing

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

Thank you for sharing these deeply personal thoughts. Writing about these things is a great way to process your feelings and let others who have had similar experiences know they are not alone.

How long have these feelings been ongoing? Was there any particular triggering event? It sounds like depression that needs to be treated one way or another. I see that this is labeled "teen," so if you don't feel you can ask your parents or guardians for help, a school counselor is a good person to start with.

If you are worried about cost, Medicaid often covers mental health services, and the income threshold for minors to receive Medicaid, at least for California's version known as Medi-Cal, is higher than it is for adults. That means that minors can sometimes qualify for services even if their parents' income is too high for the parents to use it themselves.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This is a lovely blurb, and I like how it includes a question. However, I find that questions are more dynamic when the answer is more open-ended rather than a simple yes or no. Who/What/Where/Why/How questions are ideal.

Is this meant to be a test piece or a placeholder? I recommend drafting your story in a separate program such as MS Word, Open Office, or Google Docs and then copying and pasting it when you are ready to share it.
