Day 31

Quote:All was well.

Source: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Context:This is the final line of the book and the series.

In the end does life really matter?
Have you changed the world?
Did you want to?
What were you born to do?

Questions at the end seem so frivolous.
You did matter to someone.
You changed the world in a small way.
You did what you could.

Don't ever question the importance of you
The meaning of your life is unique.
Only a few change the world
But the world will change us all.

Day 30

Quote:It is a strange thing, but when you are dreading something, and would give anything to slow down time, it has a disobliging habit of speeding up.

Source: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Context: The first task in the Triwizard Tournament was weeks away from the drawing of names in the Goblet of Fire, but from Harry's perspective, the time just flew by.

Grandparents are wise
Parents are teachers
Children are pupils
Babies are blank slates

Within a day all can change
The children age
The grandparents die
The parents clip their wings

School age comes and goes in a flash
Soon comes marriage
Children in a hurry

Parents become grand
Children take their place
New life is born
The world keeps turning.

Day 29

Quote:Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave.

Source: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Context:Dumbledore says this to the whole school following the murder of Cedric Diggory.

The right is good
The right is brave
He is noble
He is strong

The left is bad
The left is cowardice
He is snide
He is weak

The right is kind
The right is smart
He is talented
He is couteous

The left is cruel
The left is infirior
He is lame
He is rude

The right is all that one hopes to be
The left is all that we wish to avoid
To be good and bad is a choice we have
Don't let it consume you, live in harmony.

Day 28

Quote:If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals

Source: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Context:Sirius Black says this about Barty Crouch Senior, Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation.

There was a man who worked for the king. He was a top adviser and although he was a highly regarded man in the line of succession, he was a very hateful and spiteful man. One night the king had asked him to come to speak with him. He obliged, giving his full attention to the powerful man. He was told to check for flaws within his castle staff. He was a kind king, but he was also efficient and didn't tolerate laziness.
He adviser went to the staff, fist held up in rage. Why would the king degrade him with such a task? His talents were being put to waste. He wanted to know who was in charge. An older man stepped forward. He had been working for the king all his adult life and most of his childhood.
'It is obvious whatever is going on here is your fault. You're fired.' The chief adviser announced. There was shock and sadness throughout the staff members. No one had been fired in years. All were loyal to the king. The man had one day to remove himself from the castle or he would be removed forcefully. The man agreed and went to pack his things.
Later that evening, the king called on his adviser again. The king asked what he did to help the staff be more efficient. He told him that he had fired the man in charge and that he would appoint someone new and younger so that they may have more stamina to take care of things around the castle.
The king did not look happy. 'Who is to teach this young man?' The adviser did not know. 'Bring me the man you fired.' When he was told he was already gone from the castle the king grew even more angry. 'Find him and bring him back to me.'
The adviser did as he was asked, he brought the man back. He was tired of moving his belongings but still stood tall in front of his king.
'You are a kind and wise man. You shall be promoted to my chief adviser. As for you.' He said, looking to the man that had no job. 'You are to leave the grounds immediately, someone will escort you out.'

Day 27

Quote:It’d take all the fun out of life.

Source: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Context:Mrs Weasley has just found out that neither of her fun-loving prankster sons (Fred and George) have been made prefects, and this is George's response to her dismay.

Mary Pat didn't know how to be gloomy. She was always up-beat. She loved life and she wanted others to share in her excitement for a new day. 'Any day above ground is a good day'. She would say when people asked her how she was doing. The smile on her face was genuine as was the happiness in her heart. It was contagious and when she would go to her very mundane, very boring, shades of grey job, she would bring cupcakes. When someone had once complained that Mary Pat only brought sweets and they were trying to diet, she brought in a vegetable tray and add a motivational quote to try and help them reach their goal.
Some people don't like being happy. Their goal in life is to cause drama and unrest in peoples lives in pure entertainment for themselves. They would add hot pepper to the cupcakes, they would add salt to the vegetables and put up rude quotes in place of her motivational ones. But Mary Pat would fix what they had ruined. Everyone knew the difference of the real Mary Pat and the fake one.
All of them knew the difference, but she.

Day 26

Quote:I'm dying, look at me! It's killed me!

Source: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Context:Draco Malfoy has just been clawed by Buckbeak the hippogriff for disrepecting him. Malfoy decided to ham up the whole thing to try get Hagrid in trouble.

Spiders.
They scare me.
It's the way they move, how they
dangle from the ceilings and get
caught in your hair.
Some are very
dangerous,
this is
true.
Most are
harmless and they
rid the area of annoying
flies and other insects. The smaller they are, the less chilling to look at.
Unless of course an egg
sack pops and there are
tens of them. They then grow up to be the big nasty, ugly things that haunt my dreams at night.
I have seen the destruction
they can leave behind.
If you don't like them like myself, don't search for 'spider bites' on youtube. It's why we can't
have nice things.
And they just creep
up on you, you know? Like you walk into a room and your like 'what the hell is that on the wall? Oh
it's a huge spider! nice.

*I tried to get creative and make my writing look like a spider. *FacePalm*

Day 25

Quote:It was nearing midnight and the Prime Minister was sitting along in his office, reading a long memo that was slipping through his brain without leaving the slightest trace of meaning behind.

Source: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Context:This is the opening line of the book.

We read things without purpose.
To find we have wasted precious time.
They don't make an impact on our lives.
We find it rather annoying.
Finding something worth while is a challenge.
to educate our minds.
A knowledge of something new.
A spell perhaps?
To use our minds like a catalog
Holding dates and times and unimportant details
Then we miss something important.
Something that we can change.
In this world we live in.
Change the world.

Day 24

Quote:Enemies of the heir, beware.

Source: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Context:This was the first message that was scrawled on the castle walls announcing that the Chamber of Secrets had been opened.

King Solomon had been warned many times by many people. There was an heir to be born, not of the king, but of a great warrior.
This child was to destroy Solomon's kingdom and rule as a leader of the people.
Solomon scoffed at this. He had not met someone yet he had not proved himself to. As a precaution he had most of the men in his army casturated, in hopes of putting an end to the prophecies. Still it remained.
"what do you hope to accomplish, sire?" One of his advisors asked. "Keep mutilating your men and there will be no generation after us."
"Just the warriors." Was his reply.
"Then you destroy strong blood lines. Our kingdom will not be able to fight."
"We will keep an eye on our men. Put their children into trainihng early. Make them understand who their ruler is."
The years went by and Solomon formed his young ones. They knew who their leader was and the worries the prophecy brought were slowly dimishing.
That is, until one day a girl came to the castle from a far away land. She said she had news of a war brewing and she had come to offer peace. Fearing the prophecy coming to pass, Solomon rejected her offer and turned her away. A sword hung at her side. Again, she gave him another chance. Still he refused. In a quick motion she took of his head and dropped a piece of parchment at his unseeing eyes.
"Enemies of the heir, beware"

Day 23

Quote:It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.

Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

Context:Harry has found the Mirror of Erised and spends night after night sitting in front of it seeing his parents. This is Dumbledore's warning to him when he is caught by the headmaster the night before the mirror was moved.

Fleeting thoughts of the subconscious mind.
Hopes of the wounded.
Promises of tomorrow in a wonderland of imagination.
Unattainable wealth, happiness, time on this Earth.
It can steal your soul.
It can crush your spirit, deny you closure.
life of the living.
Draws to a close at the end of each day.
To bring about agony, false hope, pretty lies.
Dream big, but dream safely.

Day 22

Quote:It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.

Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

Context:It is the end of the school year, and Dumbledore is handing out "some last minute House points". Somehow, he is aware that Neville had tried to stop Harry, Ron, and Hermione from sneaking out of bed at night to go after the Philosopher's Stone.

I'm a little late in posting this morning - as you can imaging the newsfeed and my inbox have been chaotic (still very *Shock2* at the moment). So you have until 5am WDC time tomorrow to post your entry and for it to be considered "on time".

You know them from a distance. They are a familiar face in a room full of strangers. They are a beacon of hope when you are alone.
With mutual friends they are a terrible sight. They try to take all the attention. They pretend they don't hear you. They are awful creatures who want nothing to do with your happiness and who are the bane of your existence.
A friendly smile hides a foul thought. A kind word hides hateful eyes. Keep your enemies close and your friends closer.

Day 21

Quote:Bless them, they’ll go to any lengths to ignore magic, even if it’s staring them in the face.

Source: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Context:Mr Weasley has just arrived home from a late night at work and is telling his family about some of the things cruel wizards do to bait people (like making keys that shrink until they can't be found).

A baby forming in the uterus
A child hearing for the first time
A teen recovering from addiction
An adult learning to move on.

These are all magical happenings in everyday life.

The comfort someone feels after a death.
The healing power someone feels after being treated
The relaxation someone feels after things start going their way
The happiness someone feels after a friend stops by to say hello

These are magical happenings in everyday life.

It doesn't have to be big or small to change someones life.

Day 20

Quote:You will find that I will only truly have left this school when none here are loyal to me.

Source: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Context:Dumbledore has just been suspended by the Board of Governors following the attacks on several students.

Although the quote says "school", I will allow you to choose your own setting - be it a hospital, a restaurant, an office, or whatever.

I had worked at a place for ten years, a good portion of my life. I liked to think people respected me and liked working with me. Except for my bosses. I was a manager and head of my shift and I tried to make everyone feel welcome and to have a good time. Well, that turned out to mean I was 'too weak' for my boss and hers. I was either having too much fun or I was too mean. I couldn't find a middle ground.
Then you have the workers who are after your job. I wasn't gone two weeks and they had someone in training for my position. Sure, you have to be replaced but not only did she take my job she went and got a higher position that I was in line for that they told me 'I wasn't ready'.
A lot of people thought it was wrong how they treated me and I get it, everyone is in it for the money. It's their money on the line if you mess up, they don't get their bonus. Well, why should I help you? What's in it for me? Oh, right, my meager paycheck that I can't even survive on myself let alone raise children on.
There isn't anyone from that time left anymore. I'm sure I have been forgotten, but that's okay. I am happier now in my current position then I ever was when I was working for a corporation that basically treat you like herded cattle. At least I know I'm important to the people I work for.
So now as I write this from the deck of my yaht while sipping pink champagne I am proud to say I now own that corporation and those who were above me are now under me and they don't like it so much.

Day 19

Quote:Daddy's gone mad, hasn't he?

Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

Context:Vernon Dursley is driving the family all over the country trying to give the wizards and owls the slip so they can't deliver Harry's letter to him.

Daddy's have it rough
They have it tough
They learn to love
To have strength from above

They wipe noses
The door closes
Vomit on the floor
Sickness is like a war.

Mommy is a work
They have a knowing smirk
He can't take care of us like her
He won't be so sure.

Daddy's have it rough
They have it tough
To have girls or boys
They know the fear and the joys.

Day 18

Quote:Why would I go looking for someone I know wants to kill me?

Source: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Context:Harry has found out that Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban just to kill him. Mr Weasley warns Harry not to go looking for Black.

People always go looking for trouble. It doesn't matter what kind it is but they get tired of the mundane life most of them lead. If you don't like someone, you talk behind their back. If you hear about someone escaping from police custody or someone had just robbed a place close to you some lock their doors, the other half get in their cars and go looking for the bad guy in hopes of being the person to call in the tip.
It's about getting attention, about following the crowd, about living the drama that could be real life but usually is not. It's about 'baby dad' and 'baby mama'. It's about drugs and snitching. It's about what your neighbor is doing.
Life should be about trying to improve your life, the life of your family. It should be about going on vacations and being happy. Those people who are glued to their phone, to Facebook, all to catch a glimpse of what other people are going through in their daily lives they forget about their own.
Take a break from the rumors, from the lies. Learn to tell the difference. If you can't, learn to ask the source but don't make it worse by saying 'well that's what so and so told me.' That would be creating the drama, giving the pot a big old stir.
So, most people always go looking for some kind of trouble. Be that breath of fresh air for someone today and don't follow the crowd. Be there with a big smile and say 'not my monkeys, not my circus'.

Day 17

Quote:Which creature would you be unwilling to kiss?.

Source: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Context:This is the closing line of the riddle set by the Sphinx in the maze during the third task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Which creature would you want to kiss?
A dolphin with wings?
A giraffe with fangs?
A monkey with lips as deadly as arsenic?

No I would not like to kiss these creatures.
Not here, not now,
Not there, not before.
Never would I kiss those creatures.

Which creature would you want to kiss?
A bat with a charming personality?
A spider with tap shoes?
A snake with cotton candy fangs?

No I would not like to kiss these creatures.
Not here, not now,
Not there, not before.
Never would I kiss those creatures.

Which creature would you want to kiss?
A beautiful woman perhaps would be best.
No beast or reptile or skittery bug.
None of the nasty creatures that came from above.

Yes I would like to kiss that creature.
A lovely woman so frail and soft.
Not a creature at all.
A dream of the soul.

Day 16

Quote:There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other.

Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

Context:Harry and Ron have just saved Hermione and knocked out a twelve-foot-tall mountain troll. It is the one single event that brings the three of them together.

A Trio of Friendship

Good things come in threes.
So do celebrity deaths.
The three musketeers
The day the music died.

The rule of three in writing,
Threes are funnier,
Threes are effective,
Threes are satisfying.

Then there are bad threes,
Being the third wheel
Third place,
Triplets!

Harry Ron and Hermione
Three friends
Three amigos
Three wizards.

Day 15

Quote:It was as though they had been plunged into a fabulous dream.

Source: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Context:Harry and Ron have missed the Hogwart's Express after being magically blocked from entering Platform 9 3/4. They are now heading to school in Mr Weasley's flying Ford Anglia.

Blurred realities in a sea of color
Viewing an alternate reality
No one to stop your choices
No control over your thoughts

Sound is muffled
Movements are stunted
For a few moments it's a fear
fear of the fraudulent reality

It can be a wonderful experience
Sane and obscure
Wonders of what is real
What can happen if you believe

It can be a horrible experience
Death and fear
Cold and bitter
What can happen if you fail

Dreams are illusive
They are wild and free
Have no bounds do they
Or you to understand

Day 14

Quote:You don’t want to go making friends with the wrong sort.

Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone in the US)

Context: Draco has just extended a hand of friendship to Harry. He tells Harry that some wizard families are better than others, and that Harry shouldn't make friends with the wrong sort of families.

"I think I can figure out who the right sort is, thanks."
My friend is Harry Potter. I never would have imagined the boy I grew up hearing about, wondering what his life was like, who he would be, is my friend. My mother would tell us 'Would you want to be that poor boy who lost his mum and dad?' Of course we didn't. We, well, mostly Fred and George were pretty aweful to mother now and again. We heard about how brave he must have been, just a small baby who beat He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Just a baby. His mother and father dead and he was missing.
Now he's here. With me, at Hogwarts. It makes me wonder why he wanted to be friendly with our family. Perhaps it was just because we were the first family he had seen. He doesn't know much about our world. Mother said he was most likely in hiding. Maybe he was being sheltered by a muggle family. That would make sense.
I have waited a long time to be here at school. With a friend like Harry Potter by my side, I'm sure it will be a great experience.

Day 13

Quote:His life's ambition is to have his head cut off and stuck up on a plaque like his mother.

Source: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Context: Harry has just arrived at Number 12 Grimmauld Place, and Ron is explaining why he thinks the house-elf Kreacher is "a nutter" (crazy person). The Black family had a long history of beheading their house-elves (once they got too old to work) and mounting the heads on the wall of the house - Kreacher looks forward to this fate.

Wishes and hopes are all child's play.
They come to the weak and hope to stay.
Perseverance and ethics are all good traits.
Tears and sweat make the cake.

"Yes sir, no sir, yes mam, no mam"
Owners and the owned,
Live chained together
One hoping to help the other.

No more slaves!
People yell in the streets.
It's inhumane, terrible, appalling.
Some like it, don't stop their dreams.

Then to be owned all death long.
Hung on a wall
To be remembered forever more.
Oh what a most glorious fate.

Day 12

Quote:October extinguished itself in a rush of howling winds and driving rain and November arrived, cold as frozen iron, with hard frosts every morning and icy drafts that bit at exposed hands and faces.

Source: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Context: One of JK Rowling's better transitions from one chapter to the next, as she describes the start of a harsh Scottish winter.

I know it is always hard. The days are shorter, the nights seem endless, and even in the day the clouds block the sun from feeding us its glittering rays of light. It is gloomy and depressing. The beginning of the year is always spent wondering when it will end. People watch the news in hopes they see temperatures in the fifties.
I understand. Human beings do not hibernate, though some try to. They stay in the homes all day and all night, cooking hot soup and brewing cocoa with tiny marshmallows in hopes to cheer themselves up. Christmas is a joy for children but mostly stress and sleepless nights for adults. Instead of being a time of cheer and wonder it's a time of fear and uneasiness. How do we pay the bills? How do we get gifts for all the children? How are we going to fit everyone in our busy holiday schedule?
They want the snow for the holidays. Sorry it doesn't always work out. Any other time they hate to see the diverse flakes falling from the sky, creating a beautiful scenery. I never get tired of it.
Complaints fill my mind as I can hear all about cold feet, cracked and dry skin, runny noses and coughs. This is not my fault, you know I'm coming. You know I can bring sickness and aches. Better to prepare for it then try and battle it when it comes.
I'm sorry for the trouble I bring. Maybe next time around I will ease myself into it but Autumn doesn't like to stick around long. She is a rather large drama queen. I would like to be your friend. My name, is Winter and I only come around once a year.
