Introducing the New Writing.Com Editor (Beta)

After more than two decades of listening, learning, and building alongside our community, we’re incredibly excited to share something many of you have been asking for — and patiently waiting on — for years.

Today, we’re introducing the new Writing.Com Editor (Beta): a modern, visual writing experience designed to make creating on Writing.Com easier, faster, and more intuitive than ever before.

Since Writing.Com first launched in 2000, our writers have done something truly remarkable. You learned WritingML, not just the basics like bold and italics, but advanced formatting tools that allowed you to build beautifully structured, creative work in ways few platforms could support. That dedication helped shape Writing.Com into what it is today, and we’re incredibly grateful for the time, effort, and creativity you’ve poured into mastering it.

You'll find a new *Gear* icon in the toolbar of our existing editor. Clicking it lets you switch to the new v3 Beta Editor. Just confirm the prompt, and you’re in.

During the beta period, you’re free to move back and forth between the legacy editor and the new one anytime. As we continue refining the experience with your feedback, the new editor will eventually become the default editing option. You are welcome to stay in the plain text legacy editor as long as you'd like.

This new editor represents a major step forward.

The Writing.Com Editor is a true WYSIWYG (“what you see is what you get”) experience, allowing you to write and format your work visually, in real time, without needing to manually type tags. Formatting happens as you write, and changes are instantly visible. The goal is simple: let you focus more on your words and less on the mechanics behind them. And not only that, we've given you creative tools like columns, organizational tabs, 25 fonts, more colors... you're going to LOVE this.

A Note About Beta Access

This is an early release, and because of that, you may encounter bugs or incomplete features. That’s expected — and it’s why we’re starting here, with our newsfeed community. Your feedback during this beta phase is incredibly valuable and will directly help shape the final version of the editor.

We want to note that this is a desktop version only and will not be accessible on mobile yet.

You’ll also notice that formal documentation is still a work in progress. One of the exciting things about this editor is that much of it doesn’t need extensive explanation... it’s designed to feel natural and familiar. As the beta evolves, we’ll be updating our Writing.Com 101 documentation and adding new guides where they’re helpful (and eliminating the outdated ones no longer needed)!

We’re thrilled to finally put this tool into your hands and can’t wait to see what you create with it.

Thank you for growing with us — and for being part of this next chapter of Writing.Com.

• Split content at the cursor with a simple right-click
• Edit everything in one continuous scroll—or focus on one tab at a time

Settings & Personalization
Make the editor fit your workflow.
• Customize tabs for general settings, toolbar layout, autosave, and more
• Turn features on or off based on how you like to work

Why This Matters

This editor removes friction from the writing process. Formatting happens naturally, tools are easy to find, and complex features no longer interrupt your momentum. The result is a smoother, faster, more enjoyable writing experience, so you can stay focused on your work instead of the mechanics behind it.

A Note on Existing Work

Because this editor is a major shift from how Writing.Com has worked in the past, you may notice that some older pieces, especially those with heavily hand-coded WritingML, don’t always translate perfectly when first opened in the new editor.

That’s okay, and it’s expected.

In many cases, a quick update from you to fix the WritingML that is wrong, plus a save is all that’s needed to bring things fully into the new format. Think of this as an opportunity rather than a setback... a chance to revisit older work, clean things up, reorganize, and experiment with how easily the same formatting can now be achieved visually.

The time saved going forward—without needing to manually write or troubleshoot WritingML—will more than make up for it.

Thank You!

This is just the beginning. As the editor continues to evolve, we’re looking forward to refining it alongside the people who matter most—our writers. Thank you for being part of this beta, for exploring what’s new, and for helping us move Writing.Com forward in a way that stays true to who we’ve always been.
