The Beshrew of Hair Loss

“Are you sure this is gonna work?”

“Of course it is! I told you—this book belonged to my great-grandma, who was a certified witch.”

“What do you mean ‘certified’? Do witches get certificates?”

Alison groaned and flipped open the thick, weathered, leather-bound book. A puff of dust burst into the air, making both girls cough and wave their hands in protest.

Beside them, Rex whined, his tail giving an uncertain wag.

“Smells weird,” Megan whispered, watching her best friend pull out the so-called spell ingredients.

It was supposed to be harmless. What could possibly go wrong trying to make Karen—the class bully—wake up bald tomorrow?

“‘The Beshrew of Hair Loss,’” Alison read slowly. “Ingredients: one strand of hair from the person upon whom the beshrew shall be placed.”

She proudly held up the strand she’d snatched from the locker-room showers after P.E.

         “Sage.”

That was stolen from Mom’s kitchen cabinet.

         “Hair of the White Wolf.”

         Both girls turned to Rex.

“I guess he’ll do,” Alison said. “He is descended from wolves, right?”

“I guess…” Megan muttered, stroking her husky’s fur before gathering a few loose hairs from her hand and dropping them into the bowl.

“And now,” Alison read dramatically, “we chant ‘tatama nakuha’ three times, arms raised.”

On the final word, the ingredients flared up in sudden dark flames—then vanished completely.

Rex barked sharply, his ears flattening as tendrils of shadow drifted skyward before fading.

“Th-think it worked?” Megan whispered, shivering as the air around them grew colder.

“Guess we’ll find out in the morning,” Alison said with a smug grin, brushing off her hands as she turned to leave.

Rex barked again—louder this time—staring at something behind them that neither girl bothered to notice.

Probably just him being a scaredy-cat. As usual.
