| 5 Writing Things That Bug Me Five writing things that bug me! This is not grammar or punctuation – this word usage. If I added grammar and punctuation, my list of 576 things that bug me would just be an endless old man’s rant. 1) Of Many people will write “I should of done that” or “I would of helped”. Stop it. It is should have, would have, could have. So why “of”? Because the abbreviation is should’ve, and this sounds like “of”. But it isn’t. 2) Care less “I could care less.” This means you care, because you have the ability to care less. The term is “I could not care less.” This means you don’t care because there is nowhere to move backwards. 3) Literally Literally means it is happened “as written”. That is what the word means. If you type “I am literally dying here” then I will call a doctor because you need medical help. If you are not “literally” dying, then you are “figuratively” dying but I might just “literally” kill you… 4) Peeking “It peeked my interest.” No it didn’t. Peek means “look”. “It peaked my interested.” Didn’t do that, either. Peak means to reach the top. The correct term is “pique” one’s interest. This is from the French for “to irritate” and means “to arouse.” 5) Less & Fewer Fewer is when there is something you can count. Less is when there is something you cannot count. “I have fewer apples than Bob.” “I have less water than Bob.” Okay. Rant over. |
