The Underwater Waterfall - geology / landmarks - The Denmark Strait cataract is an underwater landmark between the landmasses of Greenland and Iceland. Despite lying under the ocean, it can be considered the biggest waterfall in the world. Denser cold water at the top of the cataract sinks immediately in the warmer water beneath, resulting in an average flow of 175 million cubic feet per second falling nearly 11,000 feet. These statistics surpass both the flow of Niagara Falls (approx. 85,000 cu ft/s) and the height of Venezuela's Angel Falls (approx. 2,600 ft). #092 |
