A Penny For Your Thoughts
Daily SCREAMS!!! win. Prompts:
PENNY

SCREAM
OZONE

“A penny for your thoughts.”

Wires touched. Pain exploded. Elvin Masters levitated off the table he was bound to. Ozone induced smoke evaporated off his sweaty skin. “It was a mistake,” he screamed out to himself. No other thought was left in his head.

“Goodness me, you are right, sir. You got too hot under the collar. Must be a short in the device. Let’s cool you off with water torture.”

Elvin Masters struggled uselessly trying to hold his breath. The ice cold splash and immersion made him gasp. Hands held him under within seconds of being too long.

“A penny saved, is a penny earned.”

Elvin Masters found himself stretched out on the table once more. Wet and shivering, he waited for the wires to be reconnected. Knowing what was coming made it worse.

He jerked at the words he heard. “You are a bad penny, sir.” His nerves became a fireball of agony making him sorry he was alive. His throat was too raw to say the words echoing in his skull, ‘Mistake. Please, God. It was a mistake.’

This time, bones snapped when he seizured. He spit out pieces of teeth. Elvin Masters eyes bulged, popped out of his head, were cruelly wedged back into place.

“It is worth every penny, to tell us what you know.” The voice crooned. “It makes cents, to me. How about you, to coin a phrase? In for a penny, in for a pound.”

Pain ripped Elvin Masters head off. It had been a mistake not taking his library book back on time. The fine wasn’t worth paying two cents worth of attention too. He let the warnings slip by. Over the years the amount piled up.

The librarian’s association had tracked him down using their well kept records of books past due. “Heads or tails, Elvin Masters? What will it be? Shall we try water torture?”

They wanted the book back. It seemed, it had acquired a mystic reputation for being worth a fortune. It was the only one left of its kind.

Penny dreadfuls were cheap popular serial literature produced during the nineteenth century in the United Kingdom. The term typically referred to a story published in weekly parts, each costing one penny. The subject matter of these stories was typically sensational, focusing on the exploits of detectives, criminals, or supernatural entities. For the life of him, Elvin Masters couldn’t remember where he’d left his original collector’s copy.

The last minutes of his life were spent paying the price for Elvin Master’s cheap mistake.
