| Military officers from the distant future opened a time rift that pulled 30-year-old Nolan five years into the past. They were testing their time travel technology and chose Nolan at random, but instead of pulling him back through the time rift to his own time, they decided to leave him stranded in the past. There is a precedent for this, when Nolan was in his 80s, he left a diary that described his experience, so the high command decided not to interfere with that. Nolan being trapped in the past was a natural part of their history, and if they had pulled him back to his own time, they could’ve altered their own history. Their main mission was to pull a World War 2 pilot from the past and bring him into the 21st century. They needed to test this technology out on someone, so they chose Nolan at random. There is also a precedent for the pilot being brought forward in time, and they are fulfilling the needs of history by conducting this time travel experiment. The technology works by placing a temporal displacement field around the person being brought through time, and they travel to that exact position in temporal space in the target year. Once they arrive in the target time, they must travel that same distance through normal space to arrive at those same coordinates. Subjective time within the temporal displacement field is suspended, so the journey seems instantaneous to the traveler. This also prevents the traveler from getting older or younger while traveling forward or backwards through time. Just out of respect, they send an officer to explain all of this to Nolan while he is stranded in the past. The officer is dressed in contemporary clothing so he doesn’t attract attention. Both the younger and older versions of Nolan are present while he explains what happened. The military people conducting the time travel experiment aren’t allowed to experiment on people in the recent past. The 21st century is far enough in the past that they are allowed to do this. He also shows them an electronic tablet that shows people protesting in the streets because they want older Nolan returned to his own time. The officer gives each of them a transponder so they can contact him. |
