Page 4 of Chapter 1

Loretta and her mother walked hand in hand to the horrid scene. Jesse’s face was covered but they were asked to identify him before he rode away in the ambulance. The officer asked so many questions in rapid succession. We heard Jesse come in around midnight the night before but he must have left back out. Jesse had many friends and we couldn’t think of anyone who would want to hurt him let alone kill him. It was all a big mystery. Loretta thought about Joey. He must have some idea about what happened. He must know who did this. Just then Reverend Barnes approached. He took both of mama’s hands in his and with sincerity he said “ Im sorry about your boy.” Just then mom let out a loud scream. She lost all composure and began sobbing endlessly. It was hard for me to hold back the tears but I have to be strong for Mama. I gotta to get to Joey to find out what happened. I could see that he was holding something back but I just thought it was his reaction to the gruesome scene. Joey and Jesse have been friends since third grade.
