continued chapter I

Born in Winston Salem North Carolina, Loretta was the eldest of three children born to Annymae and James Walker. Jesse, the middle child, was always mistaken for the oldest. He was her only brother and she owed it to him to learn the truth. How was she going to explain this to Terese? Her youngest sister had just married. Terese and her husband Ron was stationed in Manasas Virginia, and they were expecting their first child..
“She must be told,” thought Loretta. “What will I say? I have to talk to Joey.” Just then, he pulled into the parking lot. Joey walked in the door looking like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. “Loretta, word on the street said that Jesse owed a lot of money. He had some outrageous debts, he was in over his head,” sighed Joey. He sat down and held his head in his hands. “It’s really bad Loretta. He borrowed money against your mama’s house. I knew he gambled but I didn’t know how bad it was. They came after him to get the deed to the house and he did not budge. Jimmy and nem said he begged for more time but they had already given him extensions.” “How much?” asked Loretta. “Well, you don’t have to worry about that, we got this, we going to take care of this.” “How much? Joey, how much?”$5,000.
