A collection of magical children stories.{re-write in progress) |
Mr. Cat purred soflty, inhaling Mr. Mouse's sweet scent. "N...Now, Mr. Cat, don't you go making a mistake!" said Mr. Mouse. "I've only come to seek for your help." Mr. Cat walked around Mr. Mouse as he licked his whiskers. He was purring very low as he said, "Seek my help? Why is that Mr. Mouse? You hardly ever come to visit anymore. Why should I help you now?" He sat back and started licking his paws. "Mr. Cat, do you remember when you were just a young kitten alone in the alleys?" asked Mr. Mouse clearly feeling annoyed "How could I forget? My Mom was dead and my brothers and sisters were given away. I had to fend for myself in those horrible days. If it weren't for.." his voice trailed of as his eyes widened by the memory. Mr. Mouse was standing holding his little hat with his head bowed. He looked up to see his reflection on the cat's eyes. What he saw in them was not hunger but recognition and maybe a little hope. "It was you! I remember! You were walking home with your tools and you saw me looking in the garbage cans. I tried to run away, but you were so fast. You lifted me in your arms and took me home." He walked away. "I remember how happy I was after a few days and you read me stories from a great big book." His tail twitched to and fro. "Mr. Mouse? How did we end up like this? I was a real boy once. I sometimes dream about it." His feline eyes looked at Mr. Mouse with newfound respect and confusion. In his mind he saw glimpses of the man Mr. Mouse used to be. Sighing Mr. Mouse reached up and Mr. Cat rubbed his nose on his little cheek. Mr. Mouse hugged him and jumped onto his back stroking his head. The cat purred. "Is a long story Mr. Cat. Help me find the book while I tell you how it happened. Our lives depend on it.." Both cat and mouse walked further in to the gloomy cottage, looking around for the book. After much searching, they spotted it on their Mistress kitchen table. It took a lot of maneuvering but they finally got it to the window where Mr. and Mrs. Goat were waiting for it. The cat and the mouse looked solemnly at the goats. "Be well, Mr. and Mrs. Goat. Do not stop along the way, since there are many who seek the book. There's word of magical creatures in the forest who will stop at nothing to possess it. Remember our lives are at stake." He jumped on the windowsill. "Straight in to the Rock of Colors. Don't forget the words." He stepped back and waved them off. "Good luck!" Both Mr. and Mrs. Goat walked down the riverbank and across the stream. They stopped just before they entered the forest as lightning struck out agaisnt the darkened skies. The roll of thunder was heard in the distance. They looked at the small farm one last time, wondering if they would ever make it back. Turning as one, they entered the forest and were swallowed by the dense vegetation. Still Mr. Mouse and Mr. Cat looked on. "Good luck to them, for they need all the help they can get." Mr. Mouse climbed up the cat's back " Let's go back to the others. There's nothing we can do anymore but to wait." |
