The Magical Forest

The darkened skies split open as a lighting
arrowed into the horizon. The air carried the promise
of rain. The first drop fell on Mr. Goat's fuzzy nose
and the dread he felt was made heavier. The rain
began to fall.

Mr. Goat bowed his head against the cold rain as
he cleared the way for Mrs. Goat. He could hear her
teeth chattering as they were soaked through.

He sighed. "Dear, I think perhaps you should turn
back now. I really don't see the point in you leaving
the kid behind." He turned to peer in to her eyes.

"And leave you here all alone! Never!" She
sidestepped him in order to continue on her way."
Besides, my sister will take good care of her while
we return."

"That's exactly what's bothering me." He tugged on
the saddlebag they had strapped to his back where the
book was protected from the rain. "We both know how
dangerous this mission can be. If neither of us makes
it back, she will be left all alone. You need to go
back and be with her."

" But..." She said, looking back toward the trail
they left behind.

"No. I insist. If you go back now, you will
reach the farm just before the light begin to fade."
He drew closer and nuzzled her neck. "I love you
Mrs. Goat and I will never forgive myself if anything
shall happen to you. More importantly, baby goat
should not be left alone at times like this. Go now,
and run, be quick!"

"Be well, dear," said Mrs. Goat with one final look

Just as she was making the last turn on the trail
Mr. Goat yelled at her back "I'm no deer either. I'm
a goat!" his laughter faded as the last of her
vanished from his sight.

Now alone he turned to face the forest as he heard
the familiar hoot of the owl.He looked up to a tree
to see his friend's unblinking gaze. He smiled sadly.

"You did the right thing, Mr. Goat. It doesn't make
sense to endanger her life, with Baby Goat to
look after," said Mr. Owl lifting flight.

"What are you doing here?" asked Mr. Goat

"Why, I came to help you. Soon it will be nighttime
and you will need a pair of good eyes to guide you in
the dark." The owl chuckled. " Besides I wouldn't
miss this for the world!"

"Let us run then. I yearn to be back home." He
started at a gallop but soon, the owl and the goat
were mere flashes of movement through the forest,
unaware of a pair of yellow eyes that watched from a
distance.

Their sent was freshly carried through the crisp
air. He had no doubt of there whereabouts. He knew the
forest. It was is home.

The wolf threw back his shaggy head and howled at the
coming moon, calling his pack to a meeting. Tonight
was a night for celebration.
