Aftershocks

The damage to the surrounding countryside at the top of the South Island is huge. Some infrastructure can never be fixed. I am talking about main roads, rail links etc. New access roads may have to be built and rail may never return! I am always saddened at how these natural events bring out the best in rescues and acts of kindness but open the way for scamming contractors to make huge bucks quickly.
