| Fingers Crossed
It's only now, at a later date
that I realize how often,
when you spoke to me
one hand was completely hidden
behind your back.
As the saying goes,
hindsight is a wonderful thing,
at least at exposing naivety
and the willingness to be deceived
by words that should never
have been taken at face value.
I'm sure your fingers
must sometimes have been
in some kind of cramped agony,
crossed and pointing downwards.
Did the gesture save you
from the feelings of guilt
as you spun your tales
and drew me in?
I should have seen through the veil of lies!
By the time you decided
to come clean and hit me
with those hidden truths
it was too late...
for my self-confidence
has always been a fragile thing
and then you went and broke it,
tore me apart, although to be honest
you had long before lost my heart.
So maybe it is time for me to make the peace
and say that I forgive them all
but while those words issue from my lips
I'll have one hand behind my back,
