I dreamed you in a bed of flowers,
bright and clean in white lace like
I always knew you would be. Your
fingers were delicate around the stem
of a flower like they had been around
me, and as I moved in for a closer look,
your legs spread across the bent
grass and invited me to stop by.
But what I thought was the slight
upturn of your lips turned out to be
blood seeping from the corners of
your mouth like sap from the branches
hanging overhead, and you patted the
ground next to you, the smile finally
parting your lips to reveal coagulated
slime between your porcelain teeth.
Under a cloudless sky of sun rays, I
sat next to you and traced the perfect
rose heart of your mouth with my
thumb, until you took my hand in yours,
and soft and sweet with doe eyes of
innocence, wrapped your tongue
around my middle finger, sucking
it into your mouth gently, the
scent of iron polluting the air
between us. Thick as syrup, the
crimson dripped down my wrist
in spidered trails against my
pale skin. I dreamed you smiling
there, beautiful as I always knew
you would be, complementing
the setting so perfectly. It was the
pain bubbling just below the surface
that I hadn't counted on. Watching
it slowly spread down my arm,
enveloping me as the grass clung
to its sticky warmth and confirmed
finally that we are one in the same.
