Hi, I'm Elle. I'm based in Auckland, New Zealand. I'm the mother of two young adults, the wife of an entrepreneurial gamer and the Queen of Unfinished Projects. This blog will contain poems, short stories, possibly photos and book reviews if you're lucky, and my thoughts on a variety of topics. Hope you enjoy it.

I'm so pleased. My mother just rang and told me she's setting up Enduring Powers of Attorney (I think they're called Living Wills in America). She started off the phone call with 'You know how you've been nagging me to set these up? Well since I'm dealing with the lawyer anyway, I decided to get them done.' Yay! So happy. Steve's parents also set up theirs earlier this year, so three out of four parents will have them in place. Only my dad doesn't (to my knowledge).

My mother and my older sister live together (along with my nephew) and have done for more than ten years now. They're very close. My older sister is the logical choice to hold the power of decision making if my mum is unable to. But my mum wants to know if I want to be joint-decision maker with my sister, or only for the power to come to me if my sister is unable to make the decisions (i.e. if they were both in accident together). I'm leaning towards having just one person at a time, but will talk it through with Steve tonight and then let my mum know what I've decided after that.

Do you have a living will? Steve and I don't, but it's something I do want to get set up. We have regular wills, but not anything that activates if we're alive but incapacitated. In NZ, there are two - one for health and wellbeing, and one for finances and property. Usually they're identical, but not always. Because my mother and sister own a house together and have some (but not all) joint bank accounts, I'm thinking the property one should definitely be just my sister, but the health one is trickier. Anyway, will talk to Steve about it tonight.

Edit: After talking it through with both Steve and my younger sister, we decided to go with joint authority on both.
