A short fiction collection inspired by the Taylor Swift album "Lover"
Inspired by Taylor Swift's 2019 album Lover
Written for "Musicology Anthology"
Lover is the seventh studio album by Taylor Swift, released on August 23, 2019. She describes the album as "a love letter to love itself" and is largely a pop album with influences of country, funk, punk, R&B, and electronic/techno. The album marks a departure from the darker sounds of her previous album Reputation (2017), and instead employs brighter and more cheerful tones. It includes collaborations with Brendon Urie from Panic! at the Disco ("Me!"), as well as the Dixie Chicks ("Soon You'll Get Better"). The album's release was preceded by three singles, all of which peaked inside the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Upon the album's release, all eighteen tracks charted simultaneously and the album sold 867,000 unit its first week. The album has received generally positive reviews from critics, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album.
I've made no secret of the fact that I don't typically listen to entire albums very often. It's rare that I like more than a handful of songs on an album, and I'm much more likely to create a playlist of singles and a few tracks from a handful of albums than I am likely to listen to a single album all the way through from start to finish. This is the first album in a long time where I've genuinely liked almost all of the songs on the album and found myself listening to just this album on repeat for a number of weeks. There's a good variety of songs and song styles, and a mix of songs where I'm feeling inspired by the entirety of the lyrics as well as songs where I'm feeling inspired by snippets of verses. Ultimately, I hope this will allow me to infuse this story collection with one of the qualities that I value most in my own writing: diversity.
