When the dark waters of the sky
quench the fire of the day,
birds sleep in secret places
lamps are extinguished
and I lay my head down
in expectation of silent escape.
In the cradle of my pillow
the thrum of my pulse
echoes in my ear.
The fan hums and drums
a big band? no, a symphony
the music insistent
it ricochets from wall to wall.
Roll over and it stops
but there’s a vibration to the night
the earth emits a low growl
menacing a response to the retreating light.
Dreams create from this
other worlds into which I am thrown.
Voices arise from sparking synapses.
There is chaos in this imperfect silence
and I am glad to wake
to the choking cough
of the coffee pot.
