I think this also has a lot to do with the type of culture a family comes from. I hate to stereotype, but in general, many Asian cultures place a strong emphasis on education and on fitting in to one's surroundings to succeed. On the other hand, from what I've seen of Latin American cultures, there doesn't seem to be those same types of emphasis.
Obviously, I had an easier time because both my parents (especially my father) spoke English fairly well and were well-educated.
In my high school we had a special program called ESOL for children who did not yet know English. I think this was set up so they didn't hinder the progress of other students who already knew the language. Out of curiosity, what do you think of that sort of system?
