I know we are not supposed to compare... but I find the contrasts between my 100-year-old Florida craftsman and today's Wright-inspired boxes, surrounded by 200 exactly the same boxes next door, disconcerting. My neighborhood has almost no matching houses in the same block. Every lot is over a half-acre or more. And the 140-foot-tall oak trees average 400 years or more.
In our house, every wall displays family pictures, some dating back to 1869. Every table and end table has at least one vase of cut flowers (from the yard). What does that say about us?
But to the quest at hand...
I have a friend, a retired Army Command Sergeant Major, who spent thirty years in the service. In his house, there are a lot of American flags. And his den is wall-to-wall awards and Unit Citations. On the shelves next to his desk, rest racks of, easily, five hundred "Challenge Coins." When you walk in, there... You know, there's going to be a few old war stories over the next few hours.
