I write sequentially whenever possible, and then following that I try to write concrete scenes that can be pieced together later. Sometimes details get mixed up/facts or events switched, but hey, that's what the second draft is for, right?
I find that when I am stuck, writing a later scene can be motivation to get from point A in my book to the point B that I have already finished-- and it helps with word count.
(For example, right now I have written a few scenes which occur later and in different sections of the story, but I have a relatively specific order of events to which I want to adhere and I've been able so far to stay on the path, more or less. And I've written the final two chapters, because I know *exactly* what happens in those.)
