My characters always do things I don't really expect! So I can totally relate to what you are talking about. It happens to me all the time, though. The way I figure it - it's their story, so I should let them tell it! I am but a simple writer. ![]() I learned an interesting technique a few years back. It actually came from a local (published) author that I was lucky enough to meet, so I thought I'd try it. It's called a Character Interview. What I do is "sit down" with my character and ask him/her questions, interview style. I might ask about things that happen in the story, or just stuff in their life that lead up to the story. It really helps you put yourself in the characters shoes, if you will, and you can learn a lot about your characters. It seemed like a weird exercise at first, but I'm glad I tried it. I actually have an item in my port dedicated to the character interview, if anyone is interested in checking it out.
Because NaNo is all about word count, as long as it's related to your novel... if your stuck, you can use a character interview as part of your word count, if you want. Doesn't hurt to try it out!
