While I agree to a point (That third-person gives more freedom to describe what other characters are thinking / feeling), I find that very limitation to be very useful in certain stories. Sometimes (to me, at least), discovering things through the eyes of a single character can be a rewarding experience. An example of this would be my story "Carry Me", which deviates from my normal style by being written in first-person, because I wanted the whole story focused around how the protagonist saw things and dealt with them emotionally, without giving away what the people around her thought (thus potentially making her own observations false). While third-person is probably the more popular way to write, there are definitely reasons and uses for first-person as well. :) "There is wanting the unobtainable, and there is the obtaining of desire, and the greatest of these is the wanting. Especially since the object of desire usually turns out to exist only in some alternate reality, to be mocked by actuality." -James Blish- "Cities In Flight" |
