I've been told before, and I know myself, that I would benefit from doing a little pre-planning. The problem I seem to run into is that I can only really write during a burst of inspiration. I can't 'slog through it' like some people can. The problem that occurs is that when I try to craft and outline or work something out on the side, it saps my inspiration and desire to go back to the 'meat', and often a single page of outline just -looks- like too much work, lol. When I write 'off-the-cuff' as it were, it's no longer work, nor is it particularly difficult. I lose many hours this way, checking the clock once at 10 p.m., and then being startled by the sun coming up. XD Unfortunately, I realize this leads to disjointed scenes, insensible plots, and strange, sleep-deprived revelations. Still, that's just how I work best. I can make no excuses, lol. (There is -one- character for which I have a background. One so long and complex that I could write a Tolkien-esque Appendix for it, or pull an E.E. 'Doc' Smith and make the first book of the series nothing but a history lesson. That's partly why he hasn't been written into anything yet.) ((That would be my 'Concept Check' in my port, btw...which is no closer to coming to fruition)) "There is wanting the unobtainable, and there is the obtaining of desire, and the greatest of these is the wanting. Especially since the object of desire usually turns out to exist only in some alternate reality, to be mocked by actuality." -James Blish- "Cities In Flight" |
