Discuss all things relating to writing and genre. |
Fantasy and Sci-Fi are genres that very much cross over. Some would say sci-fi is a sub-genre of fantasy, but I think it might be possible to have a hard science fiction that is not fantasy. If the science is real science, just applied in a fictional way then it could be argued that it isn't fantasy. Books like The Martian is a very science heavy book and I don't know if it could class as fantasy in any way. I haven't read your pieces as they are for September Flash and for fairness I don't want to look at them before I read the others from those Days as well. But, the idea of a stuffed animal coming to life could be fantasy or sci-fi or both. If it comes to life by magic then it is very much fantasy. If there is a scientific explanation (pseudo- or other otherwise) then it creeps towards sci-fi. I think this example is one where sci-fi is a sub-genre of fantasy. There is a quote on the FSFS homepage which I think explains the differences quite nicely: Science fiction deals with improbable possibilities, fantasy with plausible impossibilities.
