There is a difference between saying "this year" or "yearly".

Not so much between "of late" and "lately". I think "lately" would be an adverb and so should be placed next to the verb "struggling". So if you want to end your particular sentence with it, then "of late" would be the better way to go.

But if you left out the "to score runs" phrase, then you could say

The team has been struggling lately.
