I was thinking about some of the words that arouse a sense of magic in my mind and in my heart when I encounter them. I jotted down just a sparse few in this next paragraph as examples. Honey, mushroom/toadstool, dew, sun/moonshine, fog/mist, moss, fireflies, rain/snow, lightning/thunder, hummingbirds, bats, foxes/wolves, ferns, tea, mint, swamp/bog/marsh, hollow trees, caves, pond/lake/river/ocean, ripples in water, loam… Then I wrote a short piece while trying to exclude these lovely words: The humidity engulfed her as she made for the body of water, stepping across the soft, fertile soil. When she arrived, various plants were there at the water’s edge. A tree had fallen there long ago and lay partly submerged in the water its side dotted with various fungi. She was careful not to trample the plant life as she noted tiny birds flying low across the water, disturbing its hitherto smooth surface. Then a similar piece rich with some of my magical words: The mist swirled about her face as her bare feet sank into the moss covered loam. When she arrived, the ponds edge was populated with various ferns. A rotting log lay partly into the water and bore a curious arrangement of colorful mushrooms along one side. She looked up to see a humming bird skimming across the water and leaving a trail of faint ripples on the ponds surface in its wake. I wondered if I was just including more detail in the second piece or if it was something else. The first is all but absent my magical words. I can’t help but think that such words enrich the piece and was wondering what my magical friends here on WDC thought on the subject. Perhaps ‘details’ and ‘magical words’ are one and the same. Thoughts? And I would love to hear what words all of my friends here think of as magical. Please tell me. |
