I think it's because the mind works much easier visually, rather than cerebrally, or with words and thought. We are creatures of vision, and image prompts tend to jumpstart that creative center of the brain much more quickly. I think it's because we have so many memories and and so much information stored up, that it's easy to pull from an image to spark an idea.
