I'm new. The site is very busy and crowded. There are all lots of things I'd like to do, but the instructions aren't clear. Specifically, I want to enter the Flash Fiction Contest, but I can't find the "prompt at the end of this page:" I also don't find email addresses for the judges lists to to answer questions. How can I contact one of these people? I'd like to be active, but I'm not having any luck doing anything!

Enter either of your stories with their ID# in bitem format. And you might want to include your word count.
(bitem:303715)
Replace those numbers with your item ID# which can be found right beneath your title, and replace the apostrophes with brackets. The numbers I've used show up as this forum.:

In a forum, when it says at the bottom of the page, if you don't find what you're looking for at the bottom of the header, then it's in a post in the forum.

For "Daily Flash Fiction ChallengeOpen in new Window., the latest prompt post is this one:
"Winner for 8/22 and prompt for 8/23"  Open in new Window. by Arakun the twisted raccoon Author Icon

To email someone, you can click on the envelope icon that appears near the end of their userlink. This opens a create email form preloaded with their email address.

If you don't see an envelope, right click on their handle/name to open a menu with an option to send an email. That does the same thing.

Or you can click on their suitcase icon (or costumicon) to go to their port, where a userlink with an envelope icon is displayed.

Hope that helps.

I appreciate your response but it assumes I know how to enter in "bformat" and how an ID # works. I tried Linking Help and it also assumes I know what a link is in the first place, and what the difference is among these formats is. I thought I might find this basic help in the Getting Started section. I still don't understand where to find the prompt to load a story in the forum! Is that what Flash Fiction is? I lose the desire to write at all in here with so many technical steps and jargon. It's probably easy in the end, but where do I go for a basic tutorial in plain English?

A link is a piece of text that creates a "button" that can be clicked to load a different page, either in the same tab (left click) or a new tab (right click).

Each piece of the site that users can create a button to go to (linkable) has an ID number associated with it. Items have item ID numbers. Forum posts have post ID numbers. Etc.

The writingml tag plus the ID number of the proper kind creates the link-button.

All the different kinds of item links are documented in the WritingML help pop-up window:
WritingML Help
This link opens the pop-up window to the documentation for a specific link -- the b-item link.
WritingML Help for b-item
The documentation for any of the tags can be viewed by clicking on the titles, which are dropnotes -- they open more text under the title. Click on the title again to close the extra text.

If "Daily Flash Fiction ChallengeOpen in new Window. is the flash fiction contest you are talking about, then yes, that's in a Forum item, and it works just like this support forum. Click on this link-button to go to the prompt for today (8-24): "Winner for 8/23 and prompt for 8/24"  Open in new Window. by Arakun the twisted raccoon Author Icon

If using the site, or using the writingml is not similar to anything you've done before, this group specializes in helping new members figure out how to do things:
