Yes, I use a template (stored in my review tool) and yes, my reviews are generally 2000 characters or longer ... EXCEPT 😂 Sometimes you just want to tell someone "good job - keep it up" without going into detail. Generally, these are folks I've known and doing a full review wouldn't add anything of value.
The problem I have with templates is that they tend to be rote. I find if I review 10 newbies, many times the same comments apply as far as technical notes so I added a "First Impression" section so I could be sure to personalize my message to each writer. The plus side (as noted by Lilli ☕) is that it does give you a framework so you don't overlook any aspects of the review.
