I've been here less than a year and I was timid with reviewing. I tried templates, but discussing it on a more personal level felt better. They are generally over 250 words and, if the topic really sparked thoughts along the way, they could easily come close to the 1000 word mark.
I do stay within the guidelines, best that I can. How the characters struck me. If the plot took me to think about anything. For my own reviews, I can alter it from how people responded. I don't always look for the Cinderella resolution at ends of stories, because sometimes there isn't a resolution. A stalemate at the end can spark my own imagination of what would I do?
Sometimes people like the feedback, sometimes not. I'm new at doing reviews and still learning what works best for me, but just speaking my thoughts have worked out so far.
