I love the garden metaphor!
Paying close attention to someone else's work can refocus your eyes toward the flaws in your own work, I agree.
I would add that reading great technique in action is just as valuable, if not more so. When I write a review, I try to pay attention to the why and the how so I can give more specific feedback to the author.
There is just as much to learn from what worked as there is to learn from what needs more work.
