A reviewing forum for those interested in improving their reviewing skills. |
Joey, I really enjoyed reading your account; thank you for your honesty in sharing. You make some great points too, and I agree, ultimately we can review anything. I would tend to avoid erotica just because it's not something I enjoy reading, but having said that, I am currently reviewing a novel for a friend (off-site) which is a Jilly Cooper type erotic fiction, so I can do it. Ultimately, when I am asked to review work, my decision comes down to time, and if I have creative energy to spare from my own writing. Because when I review, I don't actually take much notice of the genre in my observations. I look at the quality of the writing, the characterisations, the dialogue, the conflict, the plot etc, and none of those things are specific to genre. When I am asked on WDC to review stuff, I generally will take a quick read first. Because, like Angus said, if it's too full of spelling and typing errors, it makes for very difficult reading, and the writer needs to edit the piece to make it ready for reviewing. Also, if I really, really dislike a piece of work, I might turn down the request. I always want to be able to say something positive to the writer about their work, and occasionally there just isn't anything good to say. I'm not into giving participation trophies! I do enjoy reviewing items from different genres though, because I think it widens horizons and broadens thinking to read stuff you wouldn't normally read. And genre is really just the difference between one person wearing jeans and t-shirt and another long flowy dresses. Yet inside, what makes us all tick is pretty much the same. My reviews will always focus more on what is on the inside, so for me, genre isn't the deciding factor to me saying yes to a review request.
