A reviewing forum for those interested in improving their reviewing skills. |
One thing to consider is that if you aren't familiar with certain things that you either educate yourself about whatever is needed to do a good quality review, or not review because unless you are willing to invest into the review and help the writer/author, you are short changing yourself and the writer/author. I do not often comment on grammar because this is a weak point for me right now. I hope to be able to attend the grammar garden class this coming semester. Reading can be educational, and also reviewing can be educational because ti shows the reviewer what needs strengthening and for the author it is better for the reviewer to leave out the weaker potential strengths and allow another reviewer to add that additional information. Then after researching and studying to build up the strengths the reviewer can return to that review and edit or do another clean and fresh review a win win situation for everyone. I believe that if you are unable to review something for whatever reason it is best to honestly explain that you would rather review something else for that author. The details nay or may not be explained as comfort and relationship require. Another important point about reviewing is that asking questions of the writer/author can be very helpful. Even the reviewer benefits. Questions spark thought and reasoning. When I review if I have no questions I don't stress over this and leave that part of the review format blank. If I am not certain about something such as my knowledge base for relying on helping improve what the writer has created, I leave this alone also because I do not want to mislead or give information which may be incorrect. I will stretch my reviewing muscles and push myself within reason and knowledge ability to review word art which is a challenge for me. Even if I disagree with something, I sometimes may review it and try to be helpful and to both of us so that together the writer and reviewer can learn and grow. However If there is something which is a major issue, I may move on to something else until and when ever another opportunity to review similar something is available at which time I may decide I am able to review the word art. Sometimes if there is something in a review which could be toned down some I may comment or perhaps rewrite something as a guide or suggestion should the person want to use a different approach. Usually when reviewing I try to be a helpful as possible, give as much encouragement as possible and also point out different possibilities. I do this because when I receive reviews this is what I would like to know. Even if ti is difficult for me to read in a review I still like knowing the honest opinion.and point of view of the reviewer< their feelings, mistakes I've missed in editing or proof reading, grammar, whatever my word art brings to their reading experience. Even if they express something in a way which is bothersome, I do not take this personally because we all have different ways of expressing ourselves and sometimes we can be absolutely awkward. I'm by far not perfect. I was hatched and crawled out from under a rock.
