When I joined my local writers group (and what a great and fun bunch they turned out to be!), I was asked to introduce myself and so I got to the bit where I said "I'm a novellist".
"Oh! What do you write? Please don't tell me it's genre," said one lady.
"Science-fiction," I said into the awkward silence.
Snobbery does exist. I don't expect my stories will appeal to everyone, not even amongst sci-fi fans, but I dislike being written off because I don't write 'literature'. You might also ask yourself when a genre novel last (if ever) won a Nobel. What I'd really hate though, is if someone thought I was a snob. Yuk.
