A reviewing forum for those interested in improving their reviewing skills. |
Do you review Non-fiction? Almost exclusively. Poetry, biographies, letters, geez anything real. If no, why not? Do you have suggestions for reviewing Non-fiction? As a matter of fact, I sure do! I was actually considering a workshop type of deal in the newly created but not yet open WhataLand on reviewing non-fiction. Not that it is so very different, yet it IS really different. In non-fiction you travel to the writer's mind: why did they write this? Why did they choose this presentation or form? What motivated them? Is everything they say really true, or are they exaggerating a little or a lot? Were they in a particular mood or point in their life where this type of writing was a likely outcome? Do they show it in their writing? What about the history going on around them as they were writing? Yeah. I could talk about cats and non-fiction for weeks without much of a break methinks ![]() Anyways. Let me just say, that as a non-fiction wannabe writer, I love it when people ask questions in their reviews to me. I am a big girl, and I can decide what's too personal, and I can prevaricate or avoid with the best of them. However, I mostly just respond honestly, though if I don't feel like 'going there' at the time, that response to their review might be quite late in coming. Just, you know, in case anyone was wondering ![]() So if you want to know something about the author's motivations or thinking process, I say go ahead and ask them in your review-- worse they can do is not respond or be rude to you. In fact, I think this is how I've made most of my good friends here ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh gee look at the time. Must get back to reviewing fiction ![]() ![]() |
