A reviewing forum for those interested in improving their reviewing skills. |
Wow! What a great question. The short answer is all of the above. What do you need to learn/research to improve your reviewing technique? A.Technical aspects of writing, such as literary devices, plot devices, genre descriptions? I freely acknowledge these are a major weeknesses in my toolbox. I rarely even comment on these issues unless I am 100% certain. B. How to analyze dialogue or assess grammar? I analyze dialogue for realism. Is it stereotypical? Does it move the plot forward? Does it remain ‘in character’ for the speaker? Mostly I leave the grammar on the side. We all make typos when we race to put our thoughts on paper and when we edit ourselves I know I read what I think I meant not what is actually on the page. If an author makes a consistent grammatical error I will point that out. C. How will you go about developing your reviewing craft? Parctice. I also take the best elements from those who are kind enough to review my meager offerings. I find this is a great learning tool. There are many gifted reviewers on this site.
