I learned a lot from reviewers when I was a Newbie. At that time I was almost terrified to write a review. Between the reviews and the amount of reading I do I picked up a lot of skills that have helped me with my writing and reviewing. I do have to do a fair amount of research if I'm not familiar with the subject.
You have a good approach to reviewing and learning along the way.
