Do you look at the plot, the characters, and the way that the author puts words together?
Depends, but typically yes to the first two. The way words are put together matter only to the extent that they draw me in or push me away.
Do you like stories that have a lot of action or a lot of character development?
Action, definitely.
Do you like authors to use a lot of complicated words, or very simple words?
I prefer tight construction that conveys the intent. Complicated words don't have an impact unless they are forced. In this case, they pull me out of the story and I begin to wonder why the author chose that word.
This is also character dependent. An educated doctor might use complex words. Conversely, these same words coming from a five-year old would seem out of place.
Words paint pictures, simple colors oftentimes create complex works of art.
