Do you look at the plot, the characters, and the way that the author puts words together? This is my primary focus. I want to have the story pull me into the plot. I want to like the people and have them move around in the story like full bodies not talking heads. They need body parts. Do you like stories that have a lot of action or a lot of character development? This depends on the genre. Action can be just moving around the room (see above) I do like suspense, mystery. A bit of "I wonder what's going to happen next?' is a good thing. Don't tell me every move they are going to make or might think of making. Do you like authors to use a lot of complicated words, or very simple words? I do like an unfamiliar word used now and then. I think it's a challenge I used the word circuitous at the beginning of my new novel. A woman told me I needed to take it out. Really? the first part of the word tells you what it means. You shouldn't have to even look it up. No throw those words in there. Use them in the correct setting. Don't look for hard words and drop them in to make you look educated. It looks like you're a person trying to learn English. |
