Reviewing with River

I'm curious. about your qualifications for that first page. I have read many a book that didn't grab me in the first page. I read the blurb and if it intrigues me, I give the author at least a first chapter. Or maybe read the sample provided free. I don't think everyone can grab a reader in just the first line or page.

However, as I said in previous month's If I read the first two pages and they are filled with passive voice in every paragraph, I won't go any further. I don't believe in paying for poor writing/editing.
