1. The first page of a book should have something, anything to grab my attention. It could be a well written first paragraph that intrigues me. It could be a quirky character I know I'm going to love, a bit of humour or a sense of fear. If that first page is all passive voice in a font so small I have to squint to read it or I have to read a sentence or paragraph two or three times to fully understand the point the author is trying to make they've lost me.
To be fair, if it is a half page with only two paragraphs I will push on to the second page. If the author still hasn't piqued my interest I won't go any further.
2. A good plot is important, but without characters that come to life on the page through action, dialogue and personality it just falls flat. I need to love them or hate them or at least identify with them somehow.
Maybe it's partly instinct or I'm too fussy, but that's how I decide if a book is worth my time.
