This is sometimes contextual, though. Some writers write for a specific audience and are less worried about broad popularity (some are simply pompous and need to tone it down).
Some writers use plain language and I still don't understand. The first time I read Jack Kerouac comes to mind. Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land was more difficult, and as my introductory book to his catalogue I nearly set the thing on fire. I struggle with some of Gaiman's stuff, too , even though I highly respect his work.
