A reviewing forum for those interested in improving their reviewing skills. |
Sharing what happened to me this last two days. It's all about the review/critique. On another writing site, I joined to do a 100 day book challenge. The group introduced themselves and I found one of the members lives just a few miles from me. We connected and she was in my smaller group. After the months of writing passed. We met and discussed her writing. She is where I was 12 years ago when I joined Wdc. She appreciated my reviews because I added examples of what she needed to work on. The challenge is over and she still needs help. She'd sent me a few pages to review and I used the WORD review tab, with notes and suggestions. She came over Wed night and I showed her what an editor would send her and how to accept or reject the changes. After a few hours, she asked me to come to her house and show her on her computer what to do (I have a MAC) I agreed and went to her house last night. We went over the reviewing tab and then she asked me about the beg of her MS and would I look it over. I asked her loads of questions about putting in emotion and action into her scene. Questions about the argument her characters were having and their facial expressions and body movements to help move the story instead of just talking heads. We looked at POV that she has issues with. By 9:00 (three hours later) I was getting ready to go home and she said. "I'll pay you to help me rewrite this novel. I mean really pay you for your time. I know editing isn't cheap, some charge be the hour and other's by the word. I love how you made this story real in just the short time we worked on it." She is serious. When I left she kept saying,"I love everything you wrote and everything you told me to fix. I just want you to make sure I do it right so I don't have to do it again." What we learn by reviewing and getting reviews helps us as writers and helps us in turn to help others. Who knew I could inspire writers to become better and in so doing I may have a job. She isn't the only one, I have another book to ghost write. It's harder, but not as long as its a memoir. I'm amazed that someone thinks I'm a good writer. I feel like Sally Fields.
